Treo Cell Phone

Set up email client

I try to provide up-to-date information here for cell phone set-up. Cellular services periodically make changes. Please let me know if any of the following instructions stop working so that I may update them.

There are two elements to set up a phone to access your university email. The inbound (receive) and the outbound (send) information. Sprint, Cingular and Verizon use the same inbound settings. If you use "lamar" as your outbound mail server, you will not be able to send beyond campus.

Inbound email

  1. Start an IMAP client setup.
  2. Incoming server is typically "lamar.colostate.edu". If you are using a different email server at your computer, the Treo will have to match it.
  3. Type in your user name and password that you use to get your email on your desktop.
  4. Get mail to make sure everything is typed correctly.
  5. Once you are getting your email, you can use the menus to determine how you will be checking the mail (manually, automatically, all messages, messages no more than a week old, etc). Customization differs widely among the different email programs that may run on your phone. Refer to your documentaion for assistance.

Outbound email

Sprint
  1. Go to www.sprintpcs.com
  2. Click “Wireless” under the Personal section
  3. Click the “Manage” tab at the top of the screen
  4. Under the Sprint PCS Subscriber Column, enter your phone number and the password.  The password for both numbers is (Call: 888-788-4727.  When you are asked by the IVR how you can be helped, just say "Vision".  This will get you to the data help desk.)
  5. On the left go to “My Online” tools, then “PCS Mail”, then “Settings and Preferences”
  6. Click the “setup” tab Under Settings and preferences.
  7. Then click on “My Personal Information" at the bottom of the column on the left side of the screen.
  8. Go down to “PCS Vision User” and click on "Modify" at the right.
  9. You will see your user name, xxxxxx@sprintpcs.com.
  10. You can change this, or just write it down and then cancel.  Please note, if you change it here you will need to go to the bottom of the screen and check that your phone is turned on.  Changing anything here will push new config data to your phone.
  11. On your phone, set your outbound server to smtp.sprintpcs.com.
  12. Select "Advanced" and skip ahead to Outgoing Server Settings.
  13. Select "Use authentication (ESMTP) and type in the username from step 9 (without the @sprintpcs.com) as well as the password you supplied.
  14. Send a test message to someone off campus. If it goes out, your done!
