Three Hundred Future Aggies Aggregate!

What do over 300 young people from 46 counties in Colorado, over 150 adults, and a couple of kids from South Dakota have in common? They all attended the annual Colorado State 4-H Conference on the CSU campus for an intensive week of workshops, competition, fun, and a formal awards presentation kicking off June 19, 2007.

The Colorado State 4-H Conference is the largest event for 4-H members in the state and draws young 4-H members, leaders, coaches and volunteers from every corner of the state. An exchange brings two members from out of state each year, this year from South Dakota, to share ideas and experience. Next year two Colorado members will travel to the meeting in South Dakota.

CSU faculty, teaching assistants, admissions, and county Extension agents and specialists offered intriguing workshops in forest and range management, leadership, college planning, and public speaking, among other topics. In support of Operation Military Kids and the State 4-H Officer Team 4-Hers took the time to stuff “Hero Packs” that will be given to the civilian children of deployed National Guard living within non-military communities to show support for these kids and families.

Young people had the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of contests including a breadth of horse related events from riding to judging horses to speaking about horses, to livestock judging, to a consumer choices event, and public and extemporaneous speaking. Youth learn decision making and communication skills through their participation in the contests. Many individuals and teams will go on to represent Colorado in national events or attend the National Western 4-H Roundup in recognition of their accomplishments.

Young women dressed in formals and young men dressed their best for a formal evening of peer recognition in the Lory Student Center on the closing evening. The Daniels Foundation awarded ten 4-Hers with four year scholarships to schools of their choice. An additional 12 scholarships for almost $10,000 were awarded for the coming school year to 12 more young achievers.

With our support and encouragement these 300 4-Her’s could represent 5% of an incoming freshman class to Colorado State University. Their job is to keep learning and growing as citizens. Our job is to support them!
