Renewable energy optionsThe role of extension agents in the 21st century energy economyMarch 19-20, Denver Those who steward the land and the water are once again at the forefront of a path to independence for America. And Cooperative Extension, with research-based knowledge, information and tested training and local presence will partner within its local communities to lead the success of renewable energy that brings independence. Colorado State University made a commitment to leadership within the 25x’25 organization. The 25x’25 vision is that by 2025, America's farms, forests and ranches will provide 25 percent of the total energy consumed in the United States, while continuing to produce safe, abundant, and affordable food, feed and fiber. Cooperative Extension agents need to become prepared to lead this effort.
On March 19-20 in Denver, Colorado, Colorado State Cooperative Extension will host the first Renewable Energy Conference to begin developing the agent expertise required to help their local clients make informed decisions about the renewable energy options available to them. The agents will learn the basic components required to build a renewable energy business. They will learn how to help expand those businesses in their communities and the economic and social impacts of developing renewables for families and consumers.
Topics include energy from agriculture, or biomass; energy from wind; energy from the sun; energy from thermal heat; and community development. Current speakers include, James Fisher, Department of Energy, Larry Flowers, National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL), and Mike Bowman (25 x 25). A field trip will be offered to the NREL National Wind Energy Technology Center in Boulder, the Department of Energy’s premier wind-test facility.
