High Plains Integrated Pest Management Guide

A resource for Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Western Nebraska

The High Plains Integrated Pest Management Guide at www.highplainsipm.org provides current, effective management
options for insect and other arthropod pests, and for plant pathogens affecting 32 major field
crops and five types of livestock produced in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and Western Nebraska.

The Guide delivers general and specific pest management information. General topics include pollinator protection, principles of plant disease management, organic alternatives, monitoring techniques, sprayer calibration, special pesticide labels and commercially available biological control agents. Specific crop and pest combinations are addressed with information on identification, life cycles, damage, decision guidelines and both nonchemical and chemical control approaches. These chapters are reviewed and updated annually.

While the Guide is a large and complex site, much effort has gone into making it easy and fast to use, even with a slow internet connection. A small file size option is available to speed downloads through modems and wireless. Only line drawings are used to keep file size small, with links to a color image database if a better image is desired. The site is indexed by author, crop, pest, and key word categories, and allows for text searches by individual pests with scored results.

Once the desired pest management information is located, it can be delivered in several ways, including wireless personal data assistants (PDA), computer networks, paper copies mailed to the requester. All chapters are available in files optimized for screen viewing or for printing.

The High Plains Integrated Pest Management Guide has been developed through a partnership of pest management specialists at Colorado State University, Montana State University, University of Nebraska, and University of Wyoming that has resulted in a resource much larger and more valuable than could have been developed by a single person or a single institution. Improving the Guide is an ongoing process, with current efforts directed at adding weed management information and improved pest image links.
