Integrated Organic Agriculture Program Continues to Grow Fast

The College of Agricultural Sciences launched the Integrated Organic Agriculture Program during the fall 2007 semester with seven students from the Soil and Crop Sciences Department and the Horticulture and Landscape Architecture Department. Now, during the spring 2008 semester, there are 14 enrolled students. The college is pleased that the enrollment has doubled and hopes this trend continues.

A goal of the Organic Agriculture Program is to provide students with action-based learning opportunities in the classroom and through internship and study abroad opportunities. One of CSU’s enrolled students just returned from Costa Rica’s EARTH University where she completed a semester of academic and field study. She had the opportunity to learn sustainable agricultural practices in a tropical ecosystem. This international opportunity is one of many that we hope to provide future students who are interested in learning about organic and sustainable production, marketing, and policy.

During the spring 2008 semester the Interdisciplinary Program in Organic Agriculture will be premiering three new classes. Two one credit modules will be taught that focus on crop development techniques and organic greenhouse production. Each class will be taught in ten-week blocks. Also, the semester-long senior capstone class entitled Topics in Organic Agriculture will be taught for the first time. Each of these classes have good enrollment by students who are and are not enrolled in the Organic Program.
