Students receive awards at national meetings

 

The Department of Soil and Crop Sciences was well represented in Indianapolis, Indiana in November 2006 at the Student Association of the American Society of Agronomy, where nineteen student members received special honors and recognitions.

Kiera Coffin won first place in the Student Research Poster Presentation Contest with a research project entitled, “Emerging Contaminants in the Environment: Biosolids-Borne Antibiotics” and Jenny Jones won second place in the Research Oral Presentation Contest with a research project entitled, “Photodegradation of Manure-Borne Steroid Hormones”.

 

Seth Earl placed second in the Visual Presentation Contest with his presentation entitled, “Constructing Wetlands through the Channels of Partnership” and Richard Bradley Lindenmayer received third in the impromptu speech contest with the title "Are we too dependant on Round-up Ready Crops?". Honorable mention goes to Jacob McDaniel for his research oral presentation on “Phosphorus Release from Water Treatment Residuals-Biosolids Co-Amended Soils” and Crystal Freeman who gave an oral research presentation entitled “Phosphorus Characterization of Manure and Manured Soils after Feeding Phytase and Distillers Dry Grains Solubles (DDGS) to Swine”.

 

The Agronomy Club’s quiz bowl teams placed fifth and ninth in the nation. The teams consisted of Team Green: Earl, Dustin Cooksey, Tyler Off, and Cody Sullivan; and Team Gold: Nate McCaffrey, Emily Craig, Lindenmayer, and McDaniel.

 

Kayle Austin was elected the National 1907 Parliamentarian for the Student Section for the American Society of Agronomy for 2007 while Jake Michal completed his term as the National President and Cooksey completed his term as Parliamentarian.

 

Other members who attended the conference and participated in the events and leadership development activities were Crystal Rehor, Katie Strand, Caren Blanckaert, Kaitlin Simmons, Ashley Schmidt from Limon, Karla Dunham, and Jim Diamond.
