Twilight Garden Series Features Local Gardening Experts

Gardeners of any ability can learn from professionals during the annual Twilight Garden Series, featuring three programs on a variety of gardening topics, with an emphasis on practical information in an informal format.

The series, consisting of three, two-hour workshops, were held on June 5, June 19 and July 10 at the Colorado State University Plant Environmental Research Center, or PERC, at 630 W. Lake St. on the southwest side of campus.

Topics of the first workshop centered on special area design. "Size Considerations: Hell Strips", discussed by Zach Johnson of the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture; "Site Exposure: Sun/Shade", covered by Fred Haberecht of Colorado State's Facilities Management; and "Plant Selection for Small Landscapes", discussed by Sandy Schlicht of Alpine Gardens.

The workshop on June 19 covered water-smart irrigation. Discussions included “New Irrigation Technology”, “Water Audits: Water Pressure and Scheduling”, and “Subsurface Irrigation”.

On July 10, programs focused on environmental gardening. "Alternative Pest Control: Weeds, Diseases, Insects, Moles" were presented by the Bath Nursery and Garden Center; "Sustainable Gardening Practices: Natural Fertilizers" were discussed by Jennifer Bousselot from CSU’s Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture; and master gardener and composter John Anderson covered the best ways to compost.

The annual series is sponsored by Colorado State's Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture, Colorado State Extension and the City of Fort Collins' horticulture program.
