December 2010 Animal Sciences E-Newsletter From the Desk of William Wailes... Fall commencement is just around the corner and once again the department is graduating a phenomenal group of students, both from our undergraduate and graduate programs. The faculty members, staff and I are thankful that so many students have made the choice to be a part of Colorado State University’s Department of Animal Sciences. Not only are our students excelling, but our mission to be “a source from which visionaries and the most innovative approaches in animal husbandry technologies originate” is made possible because of our vastly talented faculty. We have just completed the selection process of naming our Livestock Leader for 2010, an honor that is voted upon by our faculty. We have had the opportunity to make another outstanding selection to add to this elite group of livestock leaders who have distinguished themselves in Colorado agriculture. This year’s selection is Randy Blach, who is greatly respected and well-known in animal agriculture. Randy will be honored at our Animal Sciences Social and Livestock Leader of the Year Presentation on Saturday, January 15, 2011 at 3:00 PM in the Centennial Room located in the Hall of Education at the National Western Stock Show. Please join us on this special day to celebrate Randy’s contributions to Colorado. Another upcoming event in the Department is the filling of the Rouse Endowed Chair in Animal Breeding and Genetics, and we are in the final stages of the process to name this individual. This Chair will add significantly to our already highly respected genetics and breeding program. I hope to announce this selection by the end of December or early January. This addition will certainly have a tremendous impact on the cattle industry in the state and nationally – stay tuned! With that, I wish you a warm and safe holidays and a happy new year! Sincerely,
William Wailes

With two national championships in 2010, the program has brought success and praise to CSU, along with substantial professional and learning opportunities for the team members. But the spoils of victory do not come without hard work and necessary support. To ensure that all students with the ability and the talent to compete on a CSU judging team have this opportunity, the teams fundraise throughout the year to pay for their travel and practice expenses.
