October 2009 Animal Sciences E-Newsletter

From the Desk of William Wailes...

Fall semester is well underway, and Animal Sciences faculty and staff are very engaged with students, research and outreach programs. Most recently the meat lab has had a renovation and our kitchen is recently remodeled. These facilities are much improved and our faculty, staff and students will benefit greatly by these improvements. As a reminder, csumeats.com is a great web site to order meat products from the department.

We extend a bitter-sweet farewell to Dr. Jim Heird, who was director of our Equine Sciences Teaching and Outreach program, as he departs for Texas. Dr. Heird has accepted a position at Texas A & M to enhance A & M’s Equine program to another level. We wish him best of luck and very heartfelt thanks for the job he did while at Colorado State University.

As the fall semester is moving quickly, I want to welcome Drs. Dale Woerner and Jason Ahola to the department. Dr. Woerner is the newest faculty member for the “Center for Meat Safety and Quality” group. Dale has been an important person with our meat judging program during his Ph.D. program. I truly look forward to Dale’s expertise and his dedication to our students. Dr. Ahola is on board as our beef industry person who recently moved from Idaho where he was the extension beef specialist. Jason’s enthusiasm and dedication are special and his expertise is going to make an impact with our students and industry. His interaction and leadership with the CSU SeedStock team will be of great benefit as our students move forward with his mentorship!

Sincerely,

William Wailes

Two Animal Sciences Students Earn Prestigious MISA Scholarships

The Meat Industry Suppliers Alliance (MISA) Scholarship is one of the most prestigious awards given to students in the Meat Science industry. It began in March of 1989 when the MISA established the MISA Foundation Scholarship Fund in hopes of distributing donations, as scholarships, to qualified students expressing a specialized interest in the meat industry. The Alliance awards two separate types of scholarships: the Siemens-MISA Scholarship which is very highly prized and worth $10,000 and the MISA Foundation Scholarship worth $5,000. The selection process is exclusive as there are several qualified candidates that apply. With that said, we are proud to recognize two Colorado State University, College of Agricultural Sciences students as 2009 MISA Scholarship recipients. Read More...
