Soil and Crop Sciences Summer Exchange
Program with Lleida University

Soil and Crop Sciences at CSU has an agreement with the University of Lleida in Spain that provides a mechanism to exchange undergraduate students each summer.
This agreement was established through the efforts of Dr. Carlos Cantero, Professor at Lleida, who spent a sabbatical leave in our department. 
To date we have sent 6 students to Spain, and we have hosted 14 students at CSU.
The University of Lleida is located on a modern campus close to the city in a traditionally agricultural area with delightful surroundings that are easily accessible on foot or by bicycle. Located in Lleida Spain, the modern University of Lleida was founded in 1972. Since its beginning over 30 years ago, the University has flourished, growing in size to include over 2,800 students.
There are eight different departments in the University with about 200 professors doing both research and teaching. Because of the importance of agriculture to the region’s economy, most areas of study at Lleida are related to agriculture. Some current issues under study include limited water in Northern Spain, the growing conditions under the many different types of soils, and the increasing use of conservational techniques.
The areas of study at the University include agroforestry engineering, horticulture, food growing botany and gardening, environmental and soil sciences, animal husbandry, plant production and forest science, chemistry, food technology, and mathematics. In addition to on-campus studies at Lleida, the University also provides services to farmers through research, development, and extension services.
Our agreement is that the student pays their own travel expenses, and the host institution pays each student a salary that will cover their living expenses for an 8-week summer period. The student is expected to work for the project that pays their salary. In return the student gets acquainted with the project and meets other students at the host institution.
